The band is Jehova's Fitness, the man is Danny and the place is San Diego. The band is completed by his friends and a vast array of performances, one following the other, each another step towards safety.

Jehova's Fitness - The House is Vacant

Each time I begin to write about music on this space, I frustrate myself by constantly falling on the obvious. Why bother including facts when a simple search would satisfy any curious listener? (For instance, I'm sure it comes as no surprise that the singer of ultra orange & emmanuelle is the wife of Roman Polanski). Thankfully, in this case, I can speak from the source: a man a plan a canal panama as sung by J Church, boldness, superhuman bird and the evolution of life/love. Meanwhile, I stop posting on Popsheep - not that I have been uninspired by music. Quite the contrary; I bought three Pwrfl Power CDs, Jehova's Fitness (recorder of the best Answering Machine music of all time) released a new album, Rafter's Sex Death Cassette finally found my hands. Consequently the realistic pace of the music writing should have had at least three entries in the last six weeks. But what did it take to break my internet apathy? Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs, I suppose. She played on Mother's Day and, since I'm getting a little bit older and more boring with every day, I recorded her half empty halls set.

The final song was Carloyn backed up by 80's 60's og/cavestomp revivalists The Mantles.

The Finches/The Mantles/Palms - Goodbye (Live at the Che Cafe)

Perhaps this internet website will become a glut of live performances from the Che Cafe, 2008-2011?

"Thank you ladies and gentlemen, especially the ladies" - Wolfboy, 2000

Ladybird - Forgot How to Roar

Ladybird - West Coast

Ladybird are making their way up the west coast of the US right now. But when it looked like P:ano was winding down, I wondered what he'd get into next and if he'd be able continue putting out such amazing records. Slow jams, sung in a white-boy soul falsetto devoted to the films of Douglas Sirk was a bit of a surprise, but the fact that it's so good isn't.

No Kids - A Bluster In The Air

As I see it, this is his best work to date. No Kids is 3/4 of P:ano and a bunch of other Vancouver musicians and the album is fantastic. I can't wait to see them live.

Bonus: this is him jamming with Phil Elvrum (of Microphones/Mt Eerie fame).

Phil Elvrum & Nick Krgovich - Whatcha Doin'

I hear they recorded this while wearing matching rolled-up white pants and flip flops. It can be found on the stellar compilation, David Shrigley's Worried Noodles, which (along with the No Kids' album "Come Into My House") is out now on TomLab now.

ppppppppppppppppparty music

Ok, for the first time in a long time I'm kinda freaking out about a band. Plans were made for later that night, movies opened, girls were asked out day of (less time to be nerve-wracked), the natural inertia of being around people kept me social until late. Now that I'm older and work an office job, Friday night is typically a write-off. I'm just too exhausted to really get it going. Now, a full night's sleep behind me, it's all about Saturday night.

Age has given me an appreciation of Bruce Springsteen, too. When I was younger he just seemed sweaty and raspy and way too patriotic. Now, though, I've begun to feel it.

So how awesome is it that Jason Anderson (ex-Wolf Colonel) rolled the best night of the week and a love of the Boss into a rollicking 3-minute anthem to fun for the older set.

Jason Anderson, "Saturday Night"

"Tonight" is a great album; it's basically the sound of good times. A little too Springsteen-y? Maybe, but this knockoff is way more entertaining than anything Win Butler did this year.

PS - Mark my words: 2008 is the year that the saxophone completes its rock instrumentation comeback.

PPS - This was my Plan B.

Stretch mic across stage to 'make a line'

This is a perfect band. I have been thinking a lot about 1996 and have been markov stepping through records/CDs looking for something related to the year in any way. I felt a connection to Plover and I wanted to bond over the internet with Maxime. However, while sawing open a coconut, I suddenly realized that a quasi-random search was useless. A simple analysis, although possibly incomplete, would at least lead me to the vicinity of 1996 ideas. So what could I possibly share with Maxime via music from 1996? Well, frustration, anger, joy and the desire for carelessness might be a start. I don't want to speak for Maxime - he may only relate to certain elements of 1996 music - but I'm pretty sure we both feel the boundless love. Perhaps a nod to flippant disregard set by guidelines of mutual respect. I could go on, but eventually The Feelings broke surface and reminded me of the perfect band, the now/me band, the band that is the way I feel - mixed up and thankful, reckless and embarrassed, so in love and so mad at love.

What do The Feelings say?
"The men of passion, we men of passion make this music. I too, will reissue compilations of rare records. I will passively and indifferently accomplish small things. I will always show up on time (early) and NOT ATTEMPT NEW THINGS. Yet, the quality of job will always be recognized, while taking into consideration expense and effort. Sometimes, it is more sensible to adapt to an off the shelf product, especially when said product is of high quality and low cost. There will be time, but no desire for outrage or edge. Sensible colours will be allowed. Only natural materials will be appreciated, with the exceptions of extremely waterproof yet breathable fabrics and extremely durable plastics. 'Not being hard on your stuff' is not only an aesthetic, but also a goal and meaning. Such extreme emotion about a person or an issue should be a warning sign that something inside yourself is out of balance. For the next two minutes, focus on something inside yourself, such as a feeling, a bodily sensation, or your breathing. To solve the mysteries of the universe, you need to find something inside yourself. A defining moment is when you found something inside yourself you didn't know you had and you pulled it out to save the day. The tough truth is that if you want to change something inside yourself, such as a way you feel, think, or behave, you need more than someone pointing out.

Useless

Which Canadian bands touring to L.A. does Cecil Seaskull meet backstage? Start with the music:

The Move - Chinatown

I moved. I rediscovered the Split Ends LP by The Move while doing so. No irony was involved - I've simply matured and 4 years ago, when I picked up the record in Guelph, Ontario, I found it too heavy on the power pop for my harpsichord obsessed mind. Things change and a little guitar/bass/drum combo is all right with me. Don't worry, it's not like I worship the Who yet (is that at 30?). These are some new shelves I built.

Shitty picture of new shelves in my kitchen - Biographical enough for you?

I'm in love with a few different girls in a few different ways. Some of them (you) might read this! I've also been putting off thank yous to a few people. If you read this, thank you! There have been fires and smoke raging everywhere. I've been inside for five days, minus the occasional surf break. Is that song over yet? If yes, listen to this:

Cross Country - Just A Thought

This song isn't my favourite Cross Country song (despite harpsichord!) but I don't think you're ready for Extended Wings or It Tastes So Good To Me. One of the first and last times I ever hosted a party, guests complained because the Ian & Sylvia record I put on was offensive. "Is this country music?" is the paraphrase that most embodies their anger. I'm pretty sensitive about recommending anything remotely country to anybody. I washed my duvet with a machine against the label's instructions. I'm struggling to be useful/meaningful in a public or private forum.
