Kingfisher and bros.
According to my friend Anna, the brown Pelican is an endangered bird found only in the estuaries and lagoons of Southern California and Baja California. However, if you spend any time in the water, just beyond the surf, chance encounters are frequent. They are constantly combing the water below for food (not fries), using the glassy part of near breaking waves as a portal on windy days. They fly in formation but sometimes hunt solo. When ones of these large winged fellows spots something worthwhile, he'll swoop back around, climb 40 feet or so and Stuka dive bomb the sea. I'm not sure what happens underwater but I imagine the bill-tip opening extraordinarily wide, filling with water and snapping shut on a wriggling prey. Meanwhile, in the desert town of Escondido:
