Daddy's Hands

The singer of one of my favourite bands of all time died last week. His name was Dave Wenger and the band was Daddy's Hands. I didn't know him personally but I probably possess as many Daddy's Hands songs as humanly possible without being an actual member of the band. And it probably would not be hyperbole to say that they've easily been one of the single greatest influences on my musical tastes.

The band's discography is quite sparse, consisting of a few demo tapes that circulated around British Columbia in the mid-1990s as well as one "official" CD that was released in 2000 on Montreal label Que Sera. I'd seen them live a few times during that period but had assumed the band disbanded following the untimely death of band member Emily, whose distinctive child-like voice provided the perfect compliment to Wenger's rasp. In the past few years, though, I've heard that Wenger continued to play shows in Victoria, Montreal, and Vancouver under the moniker of Daddy's Hands as well as in other bands.

Despite this lack of official output, Daddy's Hands tapes were traded around like holy relics in the circles that I traveled in during the mid-to-late 90s. A few lucky people maybe had a single original copy, but most had dubs of dubs of dubs. I think I listened to my battered second generation copy of the first two demos hundreds of times during that period. To this day, I could never understand why the band never became huge, especially after other Victoria-spawned bands like Frog Eyes and Wolf Parade - who definitely owe a great deal to Daddy's Hands on a number of levels - have since become so popular. Because I didn't know Wenger, I thought that the least I could do share some of his songs.

Don’t Go
Scabby Corsage
Hey Kunt

These songs from the first Daddy's Hands demo are small, filth-covered gems and are still probably among my favourite songs by any artist. (I vividly recall seeing the band perform "Scabby Corsage", in particular, at the Nelson Legion hall, with Wenger covered in blood by the end of the song after repeatedly smacking the microphone against his forehead while writhing around frantically on the ground. I guess it goes without saying, but it was definitely a very awesome show.) As you'll immediately notice, the hiss from the original tapes blankets everything in these recordings, muddying the vocals, horns, drums and guitars into an appropriately dense sludge. Yet, despite the obvious sonic limitations (which in my mind are essential anyway), these early songs achieved the right combination of noisy, feedback-drenched shambles with some genuinely catchy pop-hooks - much in the same way that Tom Waits, for instance, writes perfectly ragged songs by combining his growled lyrics and kitchen sink percussion with pretty straightforward and melodramatic piano ballads.

Bastard You’re A Hard Man To Love/Redman
Strangled Planet
Moon Vs. Mancoat

The second cassette, Intelligent and Powerful, is an equally messy but far more ambitious project than the first one. The songs are better articulated, more complex, and a bit more subtle than the early ones, both lyrically and musically. It's probably more satisfying when listened to as a whole, with its short instrumental and noise interludes scattered throughout the album. But, as you can see with these three tracks especially, the individual songs definitely stand up on their own.

There Won’t Be A Next Time
Feral You
Baby’s Fire (demo)

Like a lot of people I talked to at the time, I was a bit confused by Tutankhamun, the first official Daddy's Hands album to be released on CD. Much of the noisy punk rock of the two cassettes was gone, replaced with a much slower, slightly cleaner, and very Cramps-esque sound. I've since become quite fond of the album, although I've always kind of wished that more songs sounded like the hidden song at the end of the disk, "Feral You", which sounds to me like more of a continuation of the trajectory being set by the two cassettes. That said, I still don't understand why this album never became more popular. You can find quite a few more messy but definitely still excellent versions of this album's songs on the Hive Studios website.

I know that in the past few years Wenger wrote and recorded another Daddy's Hands album as well as songs with a bunch of other bands that he was involved with. I'm not sure why the songs were never released or what their status was prior to Wenger's death, although I know that Goldkixx posted a few of them a year or so ago and they sounded really excellent. Goldkixx also wrote a brief history of the band a few years back that is definitely worth reading and that goes into the love/hate relationship that many people have had with Wenger over the years.

* * * * * * *

My friend Roxane also wanted me to let people know about a fund that's being put together to help friends of Wenger from Eastern Canada afford to fly out to his funeral in Victoria on December 4th. If anyone wants to help out, they should email Johnny Pollard, who's managing the donations, at plench (at) telus (dot) net.

Thanks Ian, this was very nice. It's a shame to discover an artist this way, but better late than never.

i downloaded "don't go" and "strangled planet" from popsheep about a year and a half ago, maybe more. i was floored, and i've spent large chunks of time since then completely obsessed with both songs. i didn't actively search for any other songs or bootlegs or really anything. i just always hoped that one day i would come upon the new daddy's hands record.
now that he has finished writing music, i worry that a lot of people probably acted like me, noticing and appreciating his brilliance, but just being too busy to give him the credit he deserved.

thank you for this lovely tribute, ian. dave & daddy's hands will be greatly missed.

here's a couple more songs - my 2 favorites. there's one that comes from the "black album" which i got from mintaka conspiracy, called "i hate z plank".

i can't count how many times on how many sugar rushes my boyfriend and i jumped up and down on the couch doing the boy/girl singalong at the top of our lungs, stupid antics, wonderful song.

the other one is called "granny's gotta eat" (?), and was previously posted on goldkixx.

thanks for posting this. i have heard some bad things about dave out there but i have nothing but good memories of the boy. he took me into his home years ago when i was going through some tough stuff and offered me only compassion and an ear that was always willing to listen. he had a very caring, protective spirit and i owe him a huge thanks. i will miss dave, his music and his huge heart. it's nice to see these posts.
good-bye lovely boy xo

hey friends, my name is johnny pollard, or schwantz plench, if you like, and i'm the guy that tried like hell to get the travel fund together to get everyone here to victoria to celebrate dave's life and his music. i've been playing with dave in his various incarnations and moods since we were 16 year-old dorks. and i've seen the best and most innovative songwriter/guitar player leave this planet way too fucking early. i guess being an original member of daddy's hands gives me a unique and totally surreal perspective as i read and hear so many things about him since his passing. and though the reality of his death will probably be fully realized, or accepted, by me personally, i can say that i will never stop being stunned by all the things i have heard people say and write about him in the last week or so. i feel like i was the member of some insanely bizarre club to have been there since the inception of daddy's hands, and it's the happiest and at the same time, most crazed, fucked up experience of my life, at least as it relates to playing music. i've played with a bunch of folks since then, but i know that the memories of being with dave and the rest of the daddy's hands brotherhood is something i wouldn't trade for the world and my biggest regret is that not nearly enough people got a chance to experience it for themselves. because, for lack of a better term, you missed some serious shit!

this is truly sad. daddy's hands, as well as wenger's previous band ache hour credo, have had a an immeasurable influence on my musical taste. i listened to tapes of tapes of the first two demos obsessively non-stop for about three years, and have attempted sporadically over the last five to somehow get my hands on more music by this genius. the write-up, and the links are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for posting these mp3s! I have been looking for these songs for years. I was one of those lucky enough to have a tape of Intelligent and Powerful and fucking lost it.
I'm curious if there's an amount of money I could send you to persuade you to send me a copy of both the first two tapes! Please email me at kittenswithribbons AT hotmail DOT com

the news of daves passing is a blow for anyone who was moved by his genius. my name is chris-i lived in victoria for 5 or so years in the 90's- i played drums in Ten Dead Men with 2 doods that ran Slow To Burn Records-they released 2 7"s from Daves band M Blanket. I also run a label called Fans Of Bad Productions. I was lucky enough to have released songs by all of daves bands on compilation albums.(M Blanket,Ache Hour Credo and Daddys Hands)i remember one of the first shows i ever saw on Vancouver island was a show where M Blanket,Slow Children Playing, and Shutdown played in a storage area behind a convienince store in Duncan BC. I was in total love with M Blanket. The band was comprised of Dave on guitar,Chad on bass and Jamie on drums-Chad and Dave both sang. jamie was replaced by Charlie and M Blanket changed their name to Ache Hour Credo...their sound was alot different than the poppy power punk of M Blanket..it was darker and a little harder to digest at first but after a few listens it became thoroughly addictive. AHC recorded only 9 songs-two of which were on compilations FOBP and Slow To Burn released...the rest remain very obscure. I was fortunate enough to recieve a dub of the entire session which i have commited to CDR. I also have an M Blanket CDR of absolutely everything they recorded and a live board recording from a show at uVic which i have compiled onto a CDR discography. Ache Hour Credo dissolved and dave and emily from Floragore formed daddys hands with Jonah on drums. they put out 2 awesome cassette demos while still living in victoria(i have also committed these to CDR along with a 1998 Hive studio session that they did later)dave and emily moved to montreal and emily died shortly afterwards. i lost contact with dave but i did connect with Chad and Charlie from M Blanket a few times over the years...Chad (i belive still lives in Montreal and performs under the name Frankie Sparrow)Charlie is somewhere in Ontario-not sure if he is still making music...
I have known for a long time that dave was a really talented guy...and it just goes to illustrate that some of the greatest talent is so far under the radar for most people. I am contacted all the time by people as far as Japan that are searching for M Blanket/Ache Hour Credo and Daddys Hands stuff..and I know it is some hard stuff to come by-so if you are among these lovers of daves bands I invite you to scope out the list of CDR discographies on my labels myspace blog. i don't sell them but ask for a trade because i am not a bootlegger.
it truly sucks to hear about daves death. RIP

News has drifted down to me about this one, albeit 2 weeks late. My relations with Dave were really most active between the years of 1995 and 2000, namely through a band called Say Uncle (Dan Wolf Parade / Christoph Jerk With A Bomb, et al) and booking some weird ass all-ages shows in Courtenay for M Blanket and Daddy's Hands when I was in high school. Dave's definitely had black and white rep with most people but somewhere in there was a dirty heart of gold.

I only new Dave for summer when he was living in my parent's basement for a month in '97. I remember walking out into the garden one morning and he was sitting on the steps with his guitar playing Johnny Cash songs for my dad while he was pulling up weeds. I also remember him getting drunk and throwing fists full of cat food across the kitchen. For me, that was Dave in a nutshell.
Somewhere I have a "movie" that he spent the summer making (with my parent's cam-corder) about the love affair between our garden gnome and a ceramic fox. If I can get it uploaded onto the computer, I'll post a link, as it is quite touching.

God, I just found out tonight. My tears flow.... I'll miss Dave's charismatic drunkenness and ingenuous affection at Hank & Lily's shows at Vancouver's Railway Club. Seriously, one searing talent amidst a galaxy of careerist pretenders. You must be laughing now, Dave, at how random your demise -- after all the demons you so improbably held at bay. To think that I once lived but a block from your final lurch.... I'll really miss you, f*@#er!!

Hey Roxanne, if the coworker was Aaron G. then the answer is probably yes. I might have bumped into you before then at kootenay punk shows too.

Ha ha, the pet peeve of the two girls who masterminded that band was getting called "goths". Also by focussing on the bathtub youre forgetting about the two guys in robot costumes fighting each other (which was my idea).

it was nice to read all your comments about dave, i played with dave and he definitvely influenced my playing. we went out a lot, got drunk a lot, and he pissed me off more than anyone quite few times. i did let him live in the back of my place for over a year, tried my best to help him. but he was hard to help. i do own many unreleased songs we did recorded on 8 track and 4 track. many are not even mixed. i also did put the early demos on CDr, got them mastered, dave did the artwork etc... but the thing never got released. probably did 20 copies, in a black digipack. if anyone wants to do a site for daddy`s hands and put all the songs, i would give the tapes and cdr. i also still have over 300 cd of toutankamon dying in my garage as i stopped the label awhile back. if someone wants a copy, i can probably let the records available for free at some shows in montreal. i did bought the right for that record to que sera back in 2002. so if anyone wants to rereleased it, i would give those away against a little thank you. rest in peace dave.

I met Dave in a bar on East Hastings a little over two years ago. I had no idea who he was other than some guy that intrigued me because he was in a bar by himself. I was going through a bad period in my life and I guess so was he. I only met him the one time and he told me he was in a band called Daddy's Hands and that I should check them out because judging from my cd collection I might like them. Shortly after I moved back home to Calgary and despite multiple attempts to google Daddy's Hands I never found anything on them and I never saw his band play. This morning I thought about him and I googled Daddy's Hands and I was shocked to find that he died. And also shocked to find that it was in a hit and run. I only knew him for a few hours and I was a fairly naive and innocent 23 year old at the time but I he was so honest and so unpretentious and now I realize that I would have enjoyed his band if I went out to a show.

i sat next to dave in grade twelve creative writing. we used to dork out excitedly talking about Syd Barrett. certainly some parallels there.

i still remember a halloween poem Dave wrote for that class. it went something like:

"all hail the fest of mock
but its spoiled by the boil
on the end of my cock"

i remember how rock n' roll that sounded to me sitting in that class.

i was fortunate enough to have original copies of those early Daddy's Hands tapes. they have been, and continue to be an inspiration. unfortunately i lent them to a young Hank Pine who begged them off of me. he says that he lost them... i hope someone out there is listening to them.

so glad to have know Dave just a little, and to have experienced his mad creative genius.

a heartfelt hello to all who knew and loved him. we will miss you.

Until tonight, all I ever heard of Dave Wenger's was his high school-era metal cassette demo, Moral Decay, "To Build an End." My friend Blake, who booked metal gigs in B.C., gave it to me back in 1990/1991. I still have it, thank God.

It was brilliant. Still is. Technically accomplished, melodically and harmonically substantial, passionate, desperate. Dave holds nothing back in his singing, which, if it could be characterized, would best be described as outraged, mournful shrieking. It is as affecting as any metal I've heard, and now, at the age of 40, when I have moved way, way beyond metal, it continues to speak to me.

Over the years I've googled the title and band name again and again, but tonight was the first time the internet came through with anything substantive. And only to discover that Dave Wenger has left us.

Dave, thanks for sharing.
