The Sky Drops - Now Would Be

The Sky Drops - Green To Red

It would be impossible to write about these two songs or this band without mentioning My Bloody Valentine, so I'll get that out of the way right now. But I also have to add that, unlike most bands recording songs in the tradition of MBV, this comparison isn't the product of an impressive array of distortion pedals or a wall-of-white-noise aesthetic. Instead, the Sky Drops manage to capture something closer to Kevin Shields' way of writing and playing songs that somehow overcome their modest three power chord origins and sound enormous, regardless of whether one or twenty guitars are playing at once.

I really think this band is awful, and I'm surprised to see you guys covering them. "Now Would Be" could be half-way decent I think without that chunky guitar introduction. And it lasts for 30 seconds too, what torture to my ears.

The joy of the mp3 blog is that you never have to take my word for it. I dislike pretty much 90% of the bands most blogs are writing about, so I assume the same applies to our efforts here.

I absolutely adore the track Green to Red. yeah, yeah - it *is* totally Isn't Anything. But that never bothers me. It's like with Interpol - people say wow this totally rips off Joy Division (actually a lot of the time Interpol sound slightly more like The Chameleons). And yeah I can see that too - who can't. But the thing is what a lot of people forget (or else fail to see) is that a great song is a still a great song - regardless of how closely it fits into a particular genre or aesthetic.

And you know what? Joy Division actually sound a lot like some of the Neu tracks on the first LP - such as Negativland. So fuck it, really.

The bottom line is I love this track Green to Red. The first one - Now Would Be - is shite though.
