I am an asshole...

So being that I am currently in exile, I went to see Elliott Brood on spec. I wasn't expecting much yet I still managed to be disappointed. They all could play well, and at times were not bad. They showed enthusiasm yet still managed to bore my socks off. Then I realized something, I have never liked a band from Toronto. There I said it, the awful truth. I then remembered that the Hidden Camera's are from Toronto and I had a very fun time when I saw them, despite the best efforts of the opening acts ( who were all from toronto). So the Hidden Camera's aside, what the hell is happening in that city? Am I missing something?

.......at least I'm honest

ps. This is a terrible list. I think best of the year lists are stupid. Especially directionless democratic lists. It lacks all meaning. BAH HUMBUG!

No, not an asshole, but surprisingly unimaginative today (I know from your other postings that this is not a permanent condition). I say this, because personal musical preference aside, Toronto is a big place with more happening than even a local could be completely on top of. C'mon man! As you read this, somewhere in Toronto, your soon to be favourite band is rocking the Ukrainian culture centre/ local bar with shitty sound/ friend's birthday party.

on a more pracical note, what would you give Broken Social Scene out of 10?

Jay, too much time in Kelowna is letting that Western Seperatism stuff rub off on you a bit too much. On a more practical note, another list.

Five Toronto Bands That Jay Probably Likes:
1) Great Lake Swimmers
2) Jon Rae's "the River"
3) Do Make Say Think
4) Final Fantasy
5) DFA1979

Zach you make a very good point. Maybe this post will let that underbelly of goodness be known!
That said, Broken Social Scene = 5.5

Ian,
1)5.5
2) don't even try it, T.O can't claim JR
3) good point
4) another good point
5)5.5

Just imagine Vancouver, Portland, Seattle, San Fran., Olympia.....

RE: #2, I was refering to the backing band which, at least in my opinion, is the best so far.

Canada's music scene is alive in the margins so it makes sense our prized acts are from outside Toronto - our least marginalized place. BSS sits glibly at the top of the hogtown heap and they set the bar pretty low. Imagine if they made room in their ranks for key members of Destroyer or Wolf Parade or Frog Eyes or P;ano? They'd be so radically upstaged it might help them lose that arrogant quality which is the sole reason one feels comfortable pointing out their over-ratedness in the first place.

Terrible list, eh? Well, I asked you guys to contribute to it, and got no response, so don't complain.

Matthew, You did in fact ask us. Which was kind of you. Please do not take my critique of your list personally, I know that it isn't your personal list. I just fundamentally dislike the idea of ranking music in lists, especially in a democratic manner. It takes all the piss and vinegar out of it all.

That's fair enough...piss and vinegar is half the fun of lists anyway!

Hey Matthew,
I'm not so anti- list as jay is, but I totally didn't get that email (probably because my email account is super sketchy these days). Otherwise I would have been happy to reply. That said, I think Jay's hardline anti-list stance is kind of awesome in its own way. Impassioned debates in the comments can only be a good thing.

Regarding difference of opinion I couldn't agree more Ian. Also note that I am not anti-list per say, rather I dislike ranking and I'm not so fond of containing things to a calendar year or geography. I really just like seeing list of things that people like in no particular order, or more meaningful orders that in my mind should be witty or personal. Amy's recent megapost is a good example of a list that I like!

Gotta add to the pile:

1) Gentleman Reg
2) The Constantines
3) Aaron Booth
4) Royal City
5) Oscar Peterson (even when dead)

... and I have to mention Lake Holiday, just cause I love the songs... so much so I was in the band for awhile, before moving out to Vancouver.

http://www.zoilus.com/documents//2005/000624.php this is worth a read, too.

p.s. I had no idea we were asked to do anything as popsheep emails do not (ahem!) get forwarded to me.

I just sent the e-mail to the general popsheep gmail account -- I couldn't see whether you guys had individual accounts, so I hoped that it would somehow reach all of you. Hopefully next year some of you can participate!
