Frog eyes = the grateful Dead? (Win a Free cd)

Although Victoria's Frog eyes are not a jam band they share something in common with the Grateful Dead. They are one of those bands that really needs to be seen live to truly appreciate. That is not say that their albums are bad, it is just that they are so amazing in a live context. They induce deadhead like tendencies where I want to follow them around marveling at Carey Mercer's insanity every stop along the way. These recordings were made at Miss T's cabaret; the grandparents rec room decor circa 1970 Drag Queen bar turned sometimes venue which sadly burnt down last summer. I love Carey's inbetween song rants, they make me wonder if he stays up at night thinking about this stuff. I've also wondered if he prepares his banter in advance, which I doubt as he comes up with equally entertaining comments in regular conversation. The quality of these recordings are really high for a live concert, they were made by a fellow named Josh. I don't think these have been available anywhere until now, enjoy.

Steamboats ---Unreleased I think, and I just made up the name

Pitchfork is even in on the black mountain/coldplay thing.

If it is true, that seems really strange to me.

Although with the Black Mountain/Coldplay thing, maybe Coldplay are trying to complete their transformation into Radiohead-imitators by plucking bands out of semi-obscurity for their tours (RH used to play out with Clinic, Belle and Sebastian, tried to get Godspeed, etc.).

Looking at the blackmountain site (www.blackmountainarmy.com) it looks like there is confirmation of the coldplay thing.

I think you're right about Coldplay kevin. Although it can't hurt black mountain. For a hardworking band whose members have been playing in obscurity for years, they deserve a few gigs that will actually pay decently.

I just wonder bm is managing to play what is starting to look like almost one year of steady touring. Insane.

Yeah, you're right Ian- even though it is a grueling schedule, the attention they'll get can only be a good thing for them.

I saw Frog Eye's prior incarnation, Blue Pine, open for The New Pornographers (as I recall) in Victoria, a month after "Mass Romantic" dropped. Rarely had I seen such a wincingly awful performance of irritatingly sung, poorly written songs. I'm very tolerant of mental instability in music, but I'm not tolerant of their worst crime: boring me to a skull-numbing degree.

And that's why I've never given Frog Eyes much of a chance.

Still, better they have widespread success than Hot Hot Heat.

I would love a copy of this show. There is sadly very little Frog Eyes live recordings available anywhere. I hope the winner is willing to send a copy to a few others to share the wealth. I once traveled seven hours to see a 45 minute Frog Eyes show and I left completely happy.

Being somewhat on the arse end of the world, I have yet to see Frog Eyes...one day, though! I did, however, manage to leave the microphone on whilst I was singing along to 'The Fence Feels Its Post' the other day (treating the student radio listening poulation of Auckland, New Zealand to some, erm, interesting yelps and such)

'you've got the spirit' is a destroyer song off "Streethawk: A Seduction" called "The Bad Arts". that awesome Frog Eyes song you've been so kind to share is called "Picture Framing The Gigantic Men Who Fought On Steam Boats" on "The Golden River". Do I win>?
